Product Description

Formulary's TD-16 or Improved D-76 is formulated to duplicate working characteristics of Kodak D-76 precisely. D-76 is probably the most popular black and white developer in the world. It offers optimum balance of speed, fine grain, high sharpness, and good gradation. One important way TD-16 differs from D-76 is consistent results. The pH of D-76 can rise considerably, and contrast is greatly increased. We have worked out a proprietary modification of D-76 that maintains all its desirable working characteristics over a period of six months. To make 2 liters of working replenisher, use Formulary's Item Number 01-0273.

  1. TD-16 to C-16 5 Star Review

Posted by on 4th Dec 2024

Fifty years ago while in undergrad college, I was using TRI-X and D-76 with Crone C Additive. The Crone C Additive went away. Decades later, I discovered Photographers' Formulary. They had TD-16, their version of D-76, and Crone C Additive. I bought some TD-16, Crone C and mixed it according to the directions.

I still use a 4x5 camera. I did an assignment for the Denver Post and used that camera, HP5 (because TRI-X ain't what it used to be), TD-16 with 30cc of Crone C Additive to 1000cc of full-strength developer. The negatives, the prints, the scans all have other-worldly smoothness, deep shadow detail and luminous highlights. I use C-16 exclusively for HP5 and TMAX 100 (4x5) and Delta 100 (8x10). I will never use another developer. Ever.

Buy some TD-16 and Crone C Additive and try it for yourself.

  2. A Pleasant surprise. 5 Star Review

Posted by on 18th Jul 2021

I have used D-76 since the 1970's. It has become difficult to find it in the quart sized package which I have always used as I'm superstitious with mixed developer that is older than a couple of months. Enter TD-16 and that problem was taken care of.

The next question: does it perform as well as D-76? I found it performs as well or better. I shoot T-Max 100 and Tri-x in both 120 and 4x5. I most always pull the exposure one stop and decrease development by 25%. With TD-16, I found that a 20% reduction works better for me, other than that, the transition to this developer has been seamless. I would highly recommend this developer and film combination.

  3. If You Like D76, You'll Love TD-16 5 Star Review

This is a wonderful developer, especially for Kodak Tri-X. It's easy to mix, gives beautiful tonality, and there's no surprises. Plus, it remains stable 6 months after I mixed it, w/ consistent results from end to end. Can't say enough good things about it.
