Product Description

Pyrocat-HD Film Developer is a semi-compensating, high-definition developer, formulated by Sandy King as an alternative to PMK. The advantages over PMK that Mr. King cites for his formula include an approximately 1/3-stop greater effective film speed, 10-15% shorter development times, more consistent staining action, lower toxicity, and no streaking or mottling with reduced agitation.

  1. Great developer for nice tonality. 5 Star Review

Posted by on 6th Jul 2022

This was my first use of a staining developer and I am very pleased. I use it as a stand developer (2-2-500) for a little over an hour. The results were as prosed - very little grain and nice tonality, especially in the shadows and highlights. So fare I have used it on TMax400 and TMax 100 and plan to use it on HP-5 and Rollei IR400.

  2. Great stuff 5 Star Review

Posted by on 10th Mar 2021

I love this stuff - it took me a while to learn its quirks, but once I did, I have to say - it was worth it. Also - I had some trouble mixing the dry stuff - and I mix chemistry quite a bit in my usual practice - but the dry chemistry seemed inconsistent from batch to batch. This may just be because of the tiny amounts in the small packets, and how much chemistry sticks to the plastic envelope. Additionally, I would not recommend trying to mix the dry stock if you don't have a magnetic stirring hot plate. Anyhow, the liquid solved that problem, and I am very, very pleased.

  3. New Territory, no Terrors 5 Star Review

This is my first go at using this developer. First sheet films came out, as noted by the experienced users, seeming low in contrast. However, in my contact printing I didn't get above 1.5 grade. I shot some 120 today. However, I should have rechecked the massive chart beforehand. At 200 ISO it was 1:1:100 for 8 minutes at 81 degrees. I did the 400 ISO recommendation of 2:2:100 for 10 minutes at 72 degrees by mistake. I reasoned somewhat that maybe somehow it would all pan out. First glance prior to beginning wash seems to indicate that. So, it's brings latitude, it seems! I shot a duplicate roll and will see if adjustments are made in the processing of this second roll.

Excellent product, works like a champ.

  5. very comfortable used 4 Star Review

Posted by on 8th Nov 2017

I did not know what the Pyro developer was, I probably had to lose in use, without being a revealer of the beginning of the century. I felt very comfortable used, the formula works well. Now you have to follow the last look at the different dilutions and my second purchase and I would buy it again.
    Congratulations

  6. Great product 4 Star Review

Posted by on 17th Oct 2017

I'd probably give this 5 stars except this is the first time I've used the PyrocatHD formula, I'm most familiar with PyroPMK and its characteristics. I still prefer PMK for myself but this was fantastic to use in a teaching setting with the lower toxicity risk. Great results, very stable, very predictable and very easy to use. Love that it is available in pre-mixed liquid form so I don't have to measure, weigh and mix powders.

  7. A truly great developer 5 Star Review

Posted by on 21st Jun 2017

Have worked with half a dozen developers, including PMK, and never really been satisfied with the results.
Pyrocat is everything I ever wanted in a film developer. BUT. It took some finagling, mistakes and patience to get used to it. First, do not overlook the fact that it should be mixed at 50 degrees C. If that is in the instructions, I missed it. Second, I quickly 'graduated' from straight development to 2-bath development with fantastic results.

  8. A good formula 5 Star Review

Posted by on 3rd Jan 2017

If you know what Pyro developer is than you also probably know how to use it and why. This formula works well and is the result of interesting extensive experimentation you can easily read about on the web. One added advantage is its lower toxicity and variables (different dilutions at different temperature) that you can use to fulfill your needs and the needs of your negative. Will buy it again.Kudos to Photographer's Formulary for carrying this product.

  9. Works well to develop Ekatascan B/RA X-Ray film 5 Star Review

Posted by on 23rd Jun 2016

I did a test with Pyrocat HD diluted 2:2:100 developing Ekatascan X-Ray film @74 degrees from 7 min 30 sec. This developer is really amazing. It brought out a tonal range that I had never seen or thought possible by this type of film. I will be using it exclusively for Portraits from now on. I do not suggest using 2:2:100 at 74 degrees. It was just a starting point for me and I still think that I need to refine the process...perhaps 1:1:100 at 74 for 12 min on the next attempt. However you use it, the results will be amazing. Great product. I will be buying more in the future.

  10. superb film developer 5 Star Review

Posted by on 28th Aug 2014

Thanks to photo-formulary for making this developer available in liquid concentrate. Easy to mix, long lasting, very economical and most importantly a superb film developer. You know how good this is, I don't need to tell you... I have been using ID11 for 20 years and it was consistent and reliable but Pyrocat-HD is next level. Shipping to Australia is not inexpensive but it is worth it as this developer is not available here. It only took about 7-10 days to arrive which I think is excellent.
