Balanced Alkali is used to ensure optimum selenium toner effectiveness with faster wash times. After a second fixing bath in Plain Hypo, prints are toned in a Selenium Toner/Balanced Alkali solution, after which prints are treated in Hypo Clearing Agent and washed. This method yields better toning activity, faster wash times, and is more economical than the old recommendation of mixing selenium toner directly with Hypo Clearing Agent (Selenium Toner has hypo in it, mixing it with a Hypo Clearing Agent is counterproductive). 1/2 teaspoon is sufficient for at least 2 liters of solution.
